Fire destroys school gym

An overnight fire in Wayne County destroyed a school's gym Tuesday. The fire started just after midnight at the Old Belfast Center on Highway 117, just north of downtown Goldsboro.

It used to be an old elementary school, but is now used by the W.A.G.E.S. Head Start program.

The fire badly damaged the gymnasium, which was being used as a storage facility. The classrooms in the building adjacent to the gym were unaffected.

Fire officials said a passerby noticed the flames and called 911.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
