It happened just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Capital Boulevard and Brentwood Road.
According to the wreck report, the driver of a box truck, Lauren Everett of Knightdale, ran a stoplight and hit a pickup truck driven by Wade Judson Harward, Jr. of Raleigh.
Sixty-three-year-old Harward was killed.
Police have charged Avery with a red light violation.
The wreck remains under investigation.
