According to detectives, Favian Zapata took the boy to the emergency room at Johnston Medical Center on April 15, claiming he dropped the baby.
The child has multiple skull fractures that investigators say will likely result in permanent injury.
Investigators say doctors informed them that the child's injuries were not consistent with a fall and they've charged Zapata with felony child abuse with serious injury.
Bond was set at $60,000.
