The victim's father told ABC11 Eyewitness News his daughter, Crystal Gigliotti, was the mother of a 3-year-old boy named Gabriel.
The child was found in the apartment with his mother's body.
Neighbor Clayton James said the last time he saw Gigliotti was two days prior when she was playing with her son. The playground is located across from the crime scene.
Police arrived at the Stonewood Apartments just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. They've released few details, only saying they're waiting on autopsy results.
ABC11 learned Gigliotti worked at a local restaurant. Her family describes her as a good mother who worked hard to provide for her son. The 21-year-old graduated from Northern High School.
The funeral is scheduled for Monday at Saint Matthew Catholic Church on Mason Road in Durham. The family has set up a fund for 3-year-old Gabriel at Wachovia bank.
