They say an investigation uncovered that the two men, 22-year-old Raufeal Weddy of Village Drive and 26-year-old Terrel Battle of Clark Street, attempted to rob a woman in front of building 29 - which many of her family members lived in. When the woman began screaming, 10 to 15 family members came out to check on her.
One of the suspects shot at the group, but the round passed through a man's clothing, missing his body.
Both suspects were chased on foot, caught, and disarmed by the woman's relatives. Police say the men were shot during the initial struggle with their own gun and then the family severely beat, stabbed/cut both suspects.
After seeing both Weddy and Battle beaten, a third man fled the area in a Silver Buick.
One of the suspects is listed in records as a PIRU Blood gang member and was wearing a red bandana across his face when he initially tried to rob the woman.
Battle was released from the hospital Monday, and Waddy was released Tuesday afternoon.
Waddy has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy.
An investigation is still ongoing at this time.
