Kinston teen planned police shootout

KINSTON, N.C.

That's according to court documents in the case against 16-year-old Kion Dail, 18-year-old Lamont D. Byrd, 26-year-old Maretto Byrd, and 17-year-old Devine Slade, who are all charged with first-degree murder in the death of U.S. Marshal Warren Lewis III.

Lewis died June 9 from a gun blast through an apartment door as he and other officers searched a three-unit apartment building in Kinston.

Lewis, a 9-year veteran of the Nash County Sheriff's Department, was married and had two daughters.

The court document show Dail told a friend he was involved in the June 2 death of kitchen worker Thomas Hinton and was prepared to resist arrest.

Dail and Lamont Byrd are also charged with murder in Hinton's killing.
