Southbound Hwy 147 to close permanently

DURHAM

It seems more drivers will soon be joining that line waiting to merge.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will permanently close the portion of NC 147 that extends south under I-40 to T.W. Alexander Drive.

The closure is scheduled for Tuesday.

The southbound Durham Freeway spur is a popular way for drivers headed south to Cary and Apex to cut through to NC 55 using T.W. Alexander. Now, they'll either have to exit the freeway sooner to find a shortcut or follow the DOT's suggested detour - taking I-40 west to 55.

The NC DOT said the spur is being closed to allow completion of the new Triangle Parkway toll road that will link to the 540 Triangle Expressway toll road. The parkway is scheduled to open in December.
