Man arrested after picture shows him stealing washer

FAYETTEVILLE

On August 30, homeowner Shawn Schultz said his burglar alarm went off on his cell phone, so he rushed home. When he arrived at his Camden Road house, he found 45-year-old Donald Wayne Harris of Carolina Church Road in Parkton dragging his washer and dryer out the back door.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Schultz said Harris thought the house was abandoned, so that's why he was taking the items.

Schultz said he confronted Harris and tried to grab his truck keys to keep him from leaving. The two struggled and after Harris knocked him to the ground and kicked him several times, he took off.

"He was a fat guy, but he was pretty fast," Schultz told ABC11 in an interview on Aug. 31. "We wrestled a bit. He wanted my stuff, and I was trying to keep him from going."

Harris took off with the appliances, valued at $200, after Schultz snapped a photo of him.

Harris was later identified when the photograph was broadcast on television stations and in newspapers. He was later taken into custody late Monday night.

Harris is charged with common law robbery, breaking and entering, and larceny. He is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under $10,000 bond.

Meanwhile, Schultz suffered multiple lacerations to the face and swelling to both eyes.
