The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes near Lake Wheeler Road.
Witnesses at the scene told ABC11 that after the van clipped the driver's side of the bus, it then spun into an SUV.
The minivan finally stopped on the interstate, but was moved over to the shoulder to allow traffic to pass.
The three drivers were not hurt, but eight kids on the school bus were taken to WakeMed for evaluation after complaining of pain or discomfort.
Some of the other students' parents opted to take their children off the bus and drive them the rest of the way to Dillard Drive Middle School, while the remaining students were taken to school when a second bus arrived.
"They were shaken up, some got some bumps and bruises," mother Yvette Bivins said. "It's not major, but they hurt. I had to leave work, because when my son called my husband on the phone, he was crying. So our first reaction was come and see where he's at, come find him!"
It is unclear yet if any charges have been filed.
