One killed in Durham double shooting

DURHAM

Police said it appeared two men were walking down the street close to Duke's west campus when shots were fired from a car.

Police have identified the dead man as 25-year-old Nigel Scarlett. The second man, 26-year-old Kevin Davis, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

One neighbor heard the shooting. "I was on the porch paying literally no attention to what the activities were. On the street it looked normal," said Willie Patterson. "And then I heard shots. What was taking place or what had taken place, I can't tell you because I really don't know. But at this moment I am saddened. I am hurt. I am devastated."

Patterson is also the president of the neighborhood's community council. He said the council has fought hard over the last few decades to keep the neighborhood safe for families. Patterson said he knew both victims and called them "respectful."

Police aren't sure if the victims were targeted or if it was a random act of violence. Detectives are working to speak with witnesses and get a description of the car and suspects.
