A man and woman were hit by three vehicles, as they tried to cross Highway 52 near the town of Welcome.
Fox affiliate WGHP reported that the couple crossed the median on foot and was struck by a car driving in the inner southbound lane around 2:30 a.m.
North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said they found the couple's minivan in the northbound lane of the highway with the doors open.
Authorities are looking for the driver of a possible SUV or van who struck the couple first and kept going. The other two drivers stopped at the scene.
The victims' names have not been released.
Troopers said that the couple was not from Davidson County and that the bodies were taken to Chapel Hill.
