Police: Man beaten for $1.99 beer dies

ROCKY MOUNT, NC

Sixty-seven year old Juan De La Cruz passed away Saturday at Pitt Memorial Hospital. He had been hospitalized since the incident November 19.

RMPD said investigators would meet with the District Attorney later this week once autopsy results are available.

On November 19, officers went to Turner's Mini Mart at 1029 Benvenue Rd. on a robbery and assault call. They said De La Cruz told him a group of teens took a 24-ounce beer worth $1.99 from him and then beat him up. De La Cruz was first taken to Nash General Hospital and then later transferred to Pitt Memorial by air ambulance where he died more than a month later.

Police made six arrests in November. Trekwan Jaquez Dickens, 16; Mikel Sharil Jones, 16; Xaviera Zy'Keez Davis, 16; two 14-year-old male juveniles, and a 13-year-old male juvenile were all charged at that time with common law robbery and assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
