Driver in fatal Clayton teen crash charged

CLAYTON, N.C.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 10 in the 800 block of Amelia Church Road.

Police said 19-year-old Kristy Tamayo of Clayton, was driving a Honda Civic when it ran off the road, overcorrected, then crossed the center line and collided with a GMC SUV.

Tamayo sustained serious injuries. The passenger in her car, 17-year-old Tania Ritacco, passed away at WakeMed. She was a senior at Clayton High School.

Tamayo and Ritacco were headed home from Bible study when the accident happened.

The driver of the SUV was Larissa Reardon, 37, also of Clayton. She and two passengers, Dominique Reardon, 14, and Kyle Reardon, 8, were also taken to WakeMed with unknown injuries.

Tamayo has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She is set to appear in court on Feb. 15.
