Deputies: Man fires at them after shooting woman in head

SPRING LAKE, N.C.

Deputies arrived at a home in the 3100 block of Huntley Drive around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance.

Authorities said a woman had been shot and had run to a next door neighbor's home for help.  The victim, 24-year-old Heather Carini who also lives in the home, had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

"She had blood coming down her face, we took her to the back room, we laid her down and I was on the phone with dispatch and they were trying to aid me through what to do with her gunshot wound," neighbor Jerica Carter said.

Deputies found Gainey sitting on the front porch of his home with a shotgun. They said they repeatedly told Gainey to drop the weapon.  Authorities said he refused and fired off two rounds, causing the deputies to seek cover for their safety and return fire. Gainey was struck once in the side.

Carini told investigators the shooting happened due to an argument between Gainey and her mother.  There were two, two-year-old children in the home at the time of the incident. They were not hurt.

Gainey and Carini were both transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of their wounds.

Gainey has been charged with two counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by felon and assault in the presence of a minor.
