The call came in around 8:46 a.m. from a home on Brightfield Lane in the Ashfield Place subdivision.
Durham Police Department spokesperson Kammie Michael said initial reports indicated the child suffered a head injury when he fell off a counter, but after police began their investigation, they determined the child found an unsecured firearm and was injured when the gun discharged.
"This tragic incident reinforces the need for gun safety and the proper securing of firearms," said Durham Police Chief Jose L. Lopez Sr.
The boy was being treated at Duke University Medical Center. There was no word on his condition.
