Raleigh soldier hurt in attack

RALEIGH

Cody Stanton is a specialist with the 21st Military Police Company based at Fort Bragg. Family members say his unit was training with Afghan police when they drew enemy fire. During the incident, Stanton apparently stepped on an improvised explosive device.

"The first thing he told me was that Cody was injured, that he had lost both of his legs from the knee down, but that he was alive and he had had no head injuries. He was conscious. He was communicating," Stanton's mother Nancy told ABC11.

The incident happened about three hours drive outside of Kandahar.

"I just want to be with him right now. This waiting for him to get either to a hospital in Germany or back to the states is the hardest part," said Nancy.

Nancy said she's hoping to be by Cody's side by Sunday. But they're still trying to work out the details.

"I'm just asking that people pray for him," said Nancy.
