However, investigators said the driver, 18-year-old Prince Lavonte Rogers, was trying to injure his girlfriend, 27-year-old Aleisha Byrd, who was a passenger in the car, by intentionally driving his car into a grove of trees.
It's not the first time Rogers has been in trouble with the law. The Durham resident has a lengthy record that includes other domestic violence charges, some against Byrd.
Byrd told ABC 11 that Rogers picked her up from work and they began arguing when he wanted to borrow $60. He then dropped her off at her home off Lynn Road.
When Rogers came back a few minutes later, Byrd said she thought he had cooled off. So, she got back in the car with him. Byrd said as they drove north on Lead Mine Road, he became angry again and grabbed her by the throat.
That's when Byrd says she bit Rogers' arm, pulled off her seatbelt and tried to jump from the car. He yelled, 'I'm going to kill us both' and swerved off the road and into the tree recalled Byrd.
Rogers faces a slew of new charges, including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and driving without a license. His bond is set at $500,000.
Byrd is out of the hospital and suffering a fractured arm and leg. She told ABC11 she plans to end her relationship with Rogers.
