The UNC Board of Governors is set to meet next week to discuss an increase to try to keep pace with steep cuts in state funding.
But NAACP officials said education leader should not balance their budgets on the backs of students.
Students who attended a rally in Chapel Hill Wednesday agreed.
"You are looking at a two-year plan for in-state students, for two years, and that translates to about 13 hundred more dollars than a current student at university. That's a lot of money for a family in North Carolina," offered UNC junior Zaina Alsous.
"I come from a single parent home. My mom doesn't make that much money. If I had to, I'm going to be graduating this year. But if I had to be here and pay that much money, it would really affect us and we'd really be struggling," said UNC senior Sarah Baker.
The students say they plan to protest before next week's Board of Governors meeting.
