DSS found no physical abuse prior to baby's death

RALEIGH

However, the report did not indicate the child had been physically abused.

The 6-month-old died Feb. 5 in Raleigh at WakeMed.

On Jan. 21,paramedics were called to the Raleigh home he shared with his father, 28-year-old Christopher Childers, Sr.

Police said Childers shook the baby so hard that he caused brain damage. Police arrested Childers the same day and charged him with intentional child abuse.

The boy clung to life for two weeks before succumbing to his injuries. Childers' charges were upgraded to murder.

Child Protective Services first visited the child and his parents last August after receiving a report of possible neglect.

The report stated the baby was not being properly bathed, and that his bed was filled with bugs and roaches.

However by late September, CPS had determined the situation improved enough for the agency to hand over the case to other social services programs.

Childers is currently being held at the Wake County Jail.
