The three adults and three children made it out safely and without any injuries, but the New Bern Avenue apartment building is a total loss.
"Thank you to the police officer that helped me and my kids out of the window," said survivor Lisa Finch. "Thank you--he saved my family from diaster"
It took firefighters over an hour to control the blaze.
Crews blocked New Bern Avenue to all traffic for several blocks surrounding the home.
It is not clear what sparked the fire.
