McKinley Elementary School in Elkins Park held their very first Science Fair Thursday. The 4th graders showcased their projects for the entire school, and many of them were pretty impressive.
One hundred nine 4th graders participated in McKinley's first science fair Thursday afternoon; developing hypothesis and applying scientific concepts they've learned in class to find solutions.
They covered everything from moldy bread to a cat's favorite catnip!
One student asked what kind of water makes eggs sink or float?
"The solution is to always put a half cup of salt in the water to make eggs float," explained 4th grader Kevin McCullagh.
Another student wanted to know what makes Mexican jumping beans jump? She says it starts with larvae in the seed pod.
"It's going to hatch into a moth, and then every time it is in a cold place, it doesn't jump. Every time it is in a hot place, it always jumps," explained Hannah Listokin.
"What better way to learn than to create your own experiment and focus on what you want to learn," said 4th grade teacher, Colleen Murphy.
Several students experimented with plants, like Capri Marshall. And some asked how to keep fresh cut flowers alive longer?
"A vase one lasts longer because it was cut on an angle for the nutrients and water to get in it," said Julie Cybulka.
Another student studied polluted plants by putting vinegar in one.
"It started drying up and eventually died," explained Cameron Flores.
James Moss's project focused on how to alter the time his pet hamster decided to get on his exercise wheel?
"I changed the light so it would be on in the night and off in the day," said James Moss.
And who doesn't want to know what makes bubble gum blow big bubbles?
Pisay Meyer says it's the sugar.
"Hubba Bubba makes the biggest bubbles," said Pisay.
The students' parents and other family members are getting a look at their projects Thursday night.
