Smoke fills cafeteria, students evacuated

JOHNSTON COUNTY

The Smithfield Fire Department was called to Smithfield Middle school on Buffalo Road around 11:30 a.m. when the school cafeteria began to fill with smoke.

Students waited outside while fire crews investigated the cause. They soon determined that an electric motor in an HVAC system on the roof caused the problem and called school maintenance personnel to repair the faulty motor.

Students and faculty were allowed back into the school a short time later. No injures were reported.
