According to police, a 2010 Dodge driven by Omar McEachern, 32, of Fayetteville, was traveling eastbound, when he lost control, ran off the right side of the road, and struck several trees.
Three other people were in the car at the time: Shurrona Haywood, 26, of Fayetteville, Shawante Shaw, 23, of Raeford, and Jessica Jones, 29, of Fayetteville.
Jones and Shaw were ejected from the car. Jones died at the scene.
McEachern was charged with DWI and driving with a revoked license shortly after the accident. Speed and alcohol both played a role in the crash, according to police.
On Friday, police dropped the DWI charge, but only to charge McEachern with second-degree murder and two counts of felony assault by motor vehicle.
