It happened just before 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-540 near exit 11 at Six Forks Road in Raleigh.
Authorities said a contractor's dump truck that is being used for the I-540 pavement project ran into a digital message sign over the eastbound lanes.
Several lanes had to be closed as crews worked to remove the damaged sign.
Officials said it would take several hours to clear the scene and advised motorists to find an alternative route.
