Driver killed in wrong way crash on I-440

RALEIGH

Authorities said two men in separate vehicles collided head-on just after 2:45 a.m. Police said one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong way on eastbound I-440.

One driver was killed. His identity is not yet being released by police.

The other driver, 38-year-old David Howell, of Sims, was taken to WakeMed Hospital with unknown injuries.

Police say Howell has been charged with DWI. They say the results of a blood alcohol content test are pending. It is unclear with the deceased driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Police said both vehicles were traveling 60 miles per hour at impact.

Officials had to close several eastbound lanes of the interstate near Six Forks Road as they worked to clear the scene.
