Site of quadruple shooting to reopen

DURHAM

JT Tire is located at the intersection of East Geer Street and Ferrell Road.

Witnesses said a robber walked into the store and started shooting. Sixty-five-year-old Naomi Turner Wright, who ran the front desk at the store, and 32-year-old Abdelgadir Mergany Abdelganir, a cab driver who was at the shop for a repair, were killed.

Fifty-one year-old Terry Shaw - an employee of JT Tire - and another man who was a customer at the business - Javier Ramirez - were hurt.

Twenty-four-year-old O'Brian McNeil White was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of robbery.

Durham Sheriff Michael D. Andrews said his investigators have physical evidence that links White to the crime.

Goodwill Chanakii, a nearby gas station attendant, said the crime in the area has spiraled out of control.

"Customers should be free, spend their money freely, comfortably without fear of anything. Instead you're at the wrong time at the wrong moment," said Chanakii.

The shooting has become a "Call to Action" for local residents and area businesses.

Some are planning an anti-violence rally for April 7.

The daughter of one of the murdered victims said White's arrest will prevent future crime.

"I want to see him brought to justice by the law for what he's done," said JoAnna Wright. "I don't want to see him loose on the streets because if he's done it once, who is to say he wouldn't do it again?"

Wright urged others involved in the shooting to come forward. Authorities said more arrests are possible.
