Weather service warns of acute fire danger in NC

RALEIGH

The National Weather Service issued the red flag warning citing low humidity and strong winds as creating the potential for wildfires. A red flag warning means the conditions exist for any fire that starts to quickly burn out of control if it is close to fuel sources.

The counties affected are Alamance, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Franklin, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Nash, Orange, Person, Randolph, Vance, Wake, Warren and Wilson.

A brush fire broke out in Orange County Monday off Cedronella Road between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

The fire burned about ten acres but officials were able to cut a fire line around it to stop it from spreading much further.

It's not known what sparked the fire.

About 70 counties in all were put on alert for elevated fire danger.
