Police seek man for impersonating officer

DURHAM

Police said they were dispatched to a call at Duke Manor Apartments on South LaSalle Street on Tuesday evening. Residents of an apartment told officers that a man came to their apartment and claimed to be a detective investigating a larceny.

The man, believed to be Whitaker, told them he was a sergeant in the gang unit but said he didn't have any business card because he was off-duty. The residents did not let him into their apartment.

Anyone with information on Whitaker's whereabouts is asked to the Durham Police Department's front desk at (919) 560-4427.

Durham police said their officers carry badges and picture identification. If you have doubts that someone is an officer, ask to see the identification. Citizens can also call 911 to verify that a legitimate officer is at your location.
