Three Ft. Bragg paratroopers killed in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG

The men were on a patrol in southern Ghazni Province when their Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, or MRAP, was struck by the improvised explosive device.

The soldiers were identified as:

  • Sgt. Jacob M. Schwallie, 22, an assistant team leader, with Company C, 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, and a native of Clarksville, Tenn.
  • Spc. Chase S. Marta, 24, a scout, with Company C, 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, and a native of Chico, Calif.
  • Pfc. Dustin D. Gross, 19, a scout, with Company C, 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment and a native of Jeffersonville, Ky.

Each paratrooper was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
