Wake County School Board member John Tedesco is headed for a run-off. Tedesco is running for state school superintendent as a Republican.
Friday, Richard Alexander requested a run-off election because Tedesco failed to get 40 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary election.
Alexander said he finished ahead of Tedesco in 64 of the state's 100 counties.
The run-off election will be held July 17.
