Police were called to a home in the 800 block of Durham Road around 5 p.m. Sunday.
When officers arrived, they found 82-year-old Jo Dean Timberlake dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
They also found her son, 63-year-old Ricky Arlen Timberlake unresponsive following a possible attempted overdose. He was taken to Wake Med, where he remains in critical condition.
Neighbors told ABC11 that there was a note on the front door of the home that said not to come in, and to call 911.
Further details about the incident were not released.
