Construction causes Durham Freeway lane closures

DURHAM

The N.C. DOT said it is working to seal the joints in the concrete pavement in the outside lane of the southbound freeway from Briggs Avenue through the Ellis Road exit. The lane closures will begin each night at 7 p.m. and last until 6 a.m., weather permitting.

The work will require crews to shut down the southbound ramps of Briggs Avenue for one night, and the Ellis Road ramps for two or three nights.

Detours will be set up, with signs directing traffic during the ramp closures.

After those outside lanes are completed, work will move to the inside lanes. During this phase of construction, lanes from N.C. 55 to south of Ellis Road will be shut down and traffic shifted to the shoulders.

By sometime next week, work will move to northbound lanes.

The nightly work will continue through Thursday, May 24, when crews will break for Memorial Day weekend. Work will resume on Tuesday, May 29.

The $4.2 million project is expected to be finished by mid-June.
