Fayetteville Police first responded to a 911 call around 1 p.m. when a person reported a floating body in the river.
Police have since handed over the investigation to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for jurisdiction reasons.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff's office said there was not confirmation on the race or age of the body but said the body was believed to not be missing Fort Bragg solider Kelly Bordeaux.
The 23-year-old Army medic was last seen with an acquaintance in the early morning hours of April 14 after a night out with friends.
On Saturday, volunteers resumed their search for Bordeaux.
The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and positive identification.
