Husband reported wife missing after body found

FAYETTEVILLE

Smith's husband, Michael Overbee, didn't file a missing person report until about 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, after local media broke the news that a female body had been found in the Cape Fear River.

Fayetteville Police first responded to a 911 call around 1 p.m. Sunday when a person reported a floating body in the river.

On Monday, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office released Smith's name once her body was positively identified by her tattoos and jewelry.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Overbee is cooperating with the investigation.

"We don't know at this time if her death was a suicide or a murder," said Debbie Tanna, spokesperson for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. "We do believe that she had been in the water for several days."

Smith was last seen on May 24 in the 800 block of Flaming Star Drive, the mobile home neighborhood where she and Overbee lived.
