Police said the suspect opened fire on the 1300 block of Scout Drive, just off South Roxboro Street just after 2 a.m.
Eyewitnesses said the victim, who appeared to be in his late teens, was shot in the head. Police have not released the victim's identity.
The victim was taken to Duke Medical Center and later died from his injuries.
The cause of the shooting has not been determined.
