Small plane emergency at RDU

June 9, 2012 3:13:03 PM PDT
Two people were on board a small aircraft Saturday morning when a bird struck and broke the plane's windshield.

A man was flying a kit airplane that he built when the bird flew into windshield, according to RDU spokesperson Mindy Hamlin. The plane was flying over Dorton Arena with other aircraft for an event when the pilot called into RDU and landed there. The accident happened around 10:45 a.m.

The two passengers suffered cuts from the broken glass, but were treated for minor injuries at the airport.

The airport forced to shut down the small general aviation runway while responders were on scene, but has since reopened. No commercial air traffic was affected.
