Authorities told ABC11 that a 2004 Chevy Blazer was going southeast on Princeton Kenly Road when it ran off the roadway, overcorrected, hit a ditch, went airborne and then hit a tree head-on.

The driver of the SUV, 16-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Earp, died at the scene. She was a student at Princeton High School.

Her friend, 17-year-old Stephanie Renai Heaton, was in the passenger seat and sustained unknown injuries. She was airlifted to WakeMed in Raleigh, where she was listed in fair condition as of Friday morning.

Authorities said both teens were wearing seat belts. They said none of the SUV's air bags deployed, possibly due to the way the impact occurred.

Earp and Heaton were headed to a friend's house when the wreck happened, according to officials. They listed speed as the cause of the crash and noted alcohol was not a factor.
