Chaplain hit by SUV in Hope Mills

Police said an Army chaplain was seriously hurt when he was hit by a SUV while crossing Rockfish Road around 5:30 a.m. in Hope Mills Friday morning.

Capt. Billy Shane Stauffer, 46, who is assigned to the 28th Combat Support Hospital at Fort Bragg, was wearing workout clothes and did not have any identification on him. He was identified after his wife reported him missing.

He suffered major leg trauma and head injuries. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Police interviewed the driver of the SUV - a retired soldier - at scene shortly after the accident.

The investigation continues.
