Neighbors see spike in crime near Durham trail

DURHAM

Warren Creek Trail is not connected to the American Tobacco Trail, but bikers and pedestrians frequent the paved walkway.

Nearby residents said the foot paths off the trail make for easy access to their homes, as well as a quick getaway for would-be thieves.

"We call it the criminal highway because there's always something happening back there day and night," resident David Young said

Durham police's crime mapper shows that they have responded to several car break-ins in the area, but it is unclear if the crimes are related to traffic on the trail. Police told ABC11 it may be more of a trespassing issue than a home break-in issue.

Homeowners said there have been attempted break-ins recently and in the past.

"I've confronted so many people in the middle of the night walking through my backyard, walking through my neighbor's backyard, breaking into sheds, breaking windows, stuff like that. Every one of them comes off that nature trail," Young said.

Young said he installed a fence to keep people off the trail out of his backyard, but because it was close to the creek the city told him he had to take it down.
