New information in fatal hit and run

Police in Smithfield are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a pedestrian.

The accident happened on US301 South near Rainbow Lane. Jose Hernandez Galindo, of Smithfield, was spotted lying in a ditch by a passing motorist around 9:50 a.m. Saturday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS workers.

Investigators said they think he was hit sometime after 1 a.m. - possibly by a 1996-2002 Chevrolet Express Van or a GMC Savannah Van.

The vehicle lost its driver side mirror in the impact and may also have front-end damage on the same side.
