DeMuth died attempting to stop a chase that began in Raleigh and ended in Nash County Saturday morning.
According to investigators, DeMuth was attempting to put out a device to flatten the tires on a robbery suspect's car when he was hit by the vehicle.
DeMuth was a 12-year veteran of the Highway Patrol based in Rocky Mount. Funeral services were held at Englewood Baptist Church.
DeMuth's flag-draped coffin was wheeled to the church on a horse-drawn caisson as fellow officers stood to attention.
A rider-less horse with an empty saddle followed behind.
DeMuth's family was greeted by a sign at the church reading: "Jesus loves the family of Trooper Gene DeMuth."
The 42 year old leaves behind a wife Michelle and son Trevor.
In addition to some 20 years service in law enforcement, DeMuth also spent four years in the Marine Corps.
After the funeral at Englewood Baptist, Demuth was laid to rest in Red Oak Cemetery.
