Hillside High School students deal with violent week

DURHAM

Tuesday, police said 17-year old Hillside High School student Kaaylon Pamplin died after being shot last Saturday. News of his death came as 18-year old Kelvin Owens appeared in a Durham courtroom.

Owens is charged with having a fully loaded 45-caliber handgun on Hillside High School's property Monday.

Sources told ABC11 that some students are concerned that Saturday's shooting is linked to Monday's incident and possibly gang related.

Durham police and the school system are not confirming that. They will only say there's an ongoing investigation.

"I think the incidents that you mentioned have been isolated incidents," said Hillside High School Principal Dr. William Logan. "I think it's unfortunate what transpired this weekend. Again, we're just receiving information from city police."

Logan added that it was business as usual at the school Tuesday with no beefed up security or concern for other weapons on campus.

Meanwhile, Owens' bond has been increased to $10,000.
