Halloween costume lands Duke Lacrosse in spotlight

A picture of a Halloween costume worn by a member of the Duke Lacrosse women's team drew criticism Monday.

The image was first published to the team's website, but was taken down after it was republished by the national website Deadspin.com.

The image shows a group of players dressed up like various characters from the TV and movie series Little Rascals, and one player is wearing blackface makeup - apparently portraying the character "Buckwheat."

Some called the incident racially insensitive.

The team's coach issued an apology Monday.

"No offense was intended, but that does not matter because we should have realized how these choices would be viewed by those outside of our program," offered Kerstin Kimel in a statement posted on the team's website.
