3 in custody following Cary standoff

CARY, N.C.

It happened at the Hidden Oaks apartment community on Northwoods Drive.

"My kids told me the SWAT team is outside the front of the apartment," said witness Stephanie Albert. "They were being evacuated. They were told to put some warm clothing on and they were being taken out of the apartment."

Albert said it all started around 3 p.m. Wednesday. By the time she arrived home from work, her teenagers were outside. A dozen police cruisers and even more body-armored snipers had surrounded Building 118 at the apartment complex.

"The SWAT Team was knocking on the door telling them, they knew they were in there and those guys were not coming out," said Albert.

Police evacuated neighbors in the line of fire just minutes after a reported burglary in the same complex.

Eyewitness told ABC11 they heard police say the suspects were holed up inside a unit with weapons and flat screen TVs they allegedly stole Wednesday afternoon from the same complex.

However, police would neither confirm that nor would they tell ABC11 whether they had negotiated with the suspects.

"At this point, I couldn't tell you that," said Cary Police Lt. Jerry McCormick.

"I saw them kick in the door and bring out the kids [sic] first and then I saw them bring out the two adults. The two guys and the woman last," said eyewitness Belinda Sides.

After about three hours of what police called a stalemate, they took two men and a woman into custody. Police said one child, who was with the adults, is now with relatives.
