Arrest following school bus stop shooting

SMITHFIELD, N.C.

Shanquan Dakell Padgett, 21, was taken to the Johnston County Jail.

Investigators said three people were shot just before 2 p.m. Thursday at a school bus stop. Witnesses said people in two cars pulled up and starting shooting.

A woman in her 20s and her 3-year-old son were hospitalized. A 24-year-old man was also shot, and treated and released from hospital. Police said it appeared that the mother and child were struck by stray bullets.

Family members told ABC11 that Padgett was defending his home and his brother was also shot.
