Names released of 4 killed in Lee County wreck

LEE COUNTY, N.C.

Troopers say 31-year-old Aaron Powers was driving on Swann Station Road, near U.S. 421 in Broadway in Lee County around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when the car ran off the left side of the road.

Investigators say the 2006 Dodge Charger was likely speeding as it hit a mailbox and several trees before flipping over and bursting into flames when it hit the home.

Authorities say 35-year-old Katherine Powers and 33-year-old Christopher Baker, each of Broadway, and 38-year-old Rebecca Powell, of Chapin, S.C., also died in the crash.

Family members said Aaron and Katherine Powers were married with children and Baker and Powell were dating. Powell was getting ready to move to North Carolina to be with Baker.

Baker's aunt spoke to ABC11 at the scene of the crash Sunday. Karen Spainhouer said the family is planning to hold a candlelight vigil at the boat landing on Avents Ferry Road, off Highway 42 Monday at 6:30 p.m.

The owners of the home told ABC11 the home was vacant and no one had lived in it for quite some time.
