Arrest announced in Voorhees hit-and-run

VOORHEES, N.J. - January 13, 2013

Authorities announced that they've located a vehicle and took the suspected driver into custody but no further details were released.

The accident happened around 6:30 Saturday in the southbound lanes of Route 561 near Evesham Road.

The victims, identified as 28-year-old Cathy Calalang and her 20-year-old cousin Laurene, were struck while walking home.

Relatives of the victims spoke to Action News.

Calalang's parents, Rolando and Jacqueline, who live nearby, just happened to drive up to the scene.

"We saw her lying down on the pavement and we panicked about it," Rolando said.

A cousin of both victims, Janelle Halili, lives just feet from the hit-and-run accident scene and had a message for the driver.

"It's two ladies. You could've at least stopped or helped instead of running away," Halili said.

The two women, both in their 20s, were transported to Cooper University Hospital.

Calalang lost her front teeth and suffered several broken bones and bruises.

"My daughter is feeling pain from head to toe," Rolando said.

"She has a broken bone in her mouth," Calalang's mother Jacqueline said.

According to family members, Laurene will spend the next few days, in intensive care. They say she was in town visiting from the Philippines

"She was just enjoying herself here and we don't know yet what her parents in the Philippines are feeling right now," Rolando said.

Laurene was also said to be getting married in just 3 weeks.

"Unfortunately, this thing happened and we're very sad about the accident," Rolando said.
