Warrant: Gang member may have been target in double slaying

RALEIGH

Jose Samuel Flores Mendoza and Maria Saravia Mendoza, both 34, were found dead by deputies in their house in the 700 block of Colonial Drive around 12:30 a.m. January 5.

A search warrant says that the reputed gang member lived at the house for a time before the Mendozas moved in, and detectives suspect he was the real target of the attack.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison announced two arrests in the case Wednesday. An unnamed 15 year old and 16-year-old Israel Vasquez, of 165 Montiseno Drive, Raleigh, face two counts of murder, felony conspiracy, first-degree burglary, possession of stolen property, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The Mendozas 3-year-old child was in the home at the time of the killings. The couple also leaves an older child behind.

Investigators found shell casings for a .45 caliber pistol and a semi-automatic assault rifle at the scene of the killings.

The warrant released Thursday said it's believed the same pistol was used in another shooting in early December on Meadowbrook Road.
