The Raleigh & Durham area had the biggest gains in home sales in the United States in 2012, according to RE/MAX.

In the company's National Housing Report for January 2013 -- based on MLS data from over 50 of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States -- showed home sales measured from Dec 2011 - Dec 2012 rose 31.3 percent.

The report credits population growth for the boost. Home Buying Institute reports home prices rose more modestly.

Charlotte ranked sixth overall with sales jumping more than 16 percent in 2012.
