A detective with the Lumberton Police Department died Monday morning following a weekend motorcycle accident.

Duane Swell Hunter was driving on McRainey Road off U.S. 301 near St. Pauls just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday when his Harley Davidson ran off of the road not far from his home.

According to Sgt. Daniel Hilburn with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Hunter's bike struck a highway sign, ejecting the police detective.

The road was at a curve, and authorities said Hunter was exceeding a safe speed when the accident happened.

The 53 year old was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, where he later died after suffering multiple injuries. He was wearing a helmet, according to police.

Hunter's motorcycle was reportedly destroyed in the accident.

Further details about the incident have not been released.
